Help them break the cycle of poverty

Single-parent families are at risk of poverty due to a rise in precarious employment, living costs and housing affordability.

These conditions make single parents (mothers especially) more prone to financial insecurity, even if they’re employed.

Our financial aid programs help single parents secure essentials like housing, food, and clothing through:

  • Direct cash assistance
  • Guidance on government benefits
  • Microlending

Alleviate their mental and emotional struggles

Children of single-parents are twice as likely to suffer from mental illness, and single mothers face the same elevated risk.

Working with social workers and therapists we provide counselling for single-parent families, covering topics that include:

  • Managing stress and exhaustion
  • Dealing with grief and loss
  • Maintaining a work-life-family balance
  • Raising smarter, happier kids
  • Financial literacy and planning

Expand their ability to feel happy, healthy, and hopeful

Being the lone provider for their children can lead to feelings of helplessness and a higher susceptibility to physical illness. These stressors take a massive toll on the well-being of parent and child.

Beyond financial and mental health services, One Parent provides personal development support for both parents and their kids including:

  • Retraining and career opportunities
  • Extracurricular activities for the kids
  • Transportation assistance

Support them through life-or-death circumstances

Areas affected most by climate change, war and inequality feature some of the highest numbers of single-parent households.

The already demanding role of being the sole provider is compounded by threats to their safety, trauma, and a lack of resources.

One Parent operates several programs in these vulnerable regions to help single parents and their children with:

  • Food supplies
  • Clean water
  • Comfort items
  • Shelter
  • Healthcare

Provide a safe haven for those who have nowhere to turn

Many single mothers and their children are forced to flee situations involving domestic violence.

Too often they have no support system or safe place to stay, and their chances of escaping poverty plummet dramatically.

At One Parent we work with our partners to help survivors of domestic violence through:

  • Shelters and safe houses
  • Basic life essentials
  • Trauma support
  • Career opportunities
  • Supervised childcare
