Warming hearts in need during winter in Syria

Syria has faced immense hardships throughout the years. The war in Syria has left thousands to battle the consequences of the disaster, dealing with extreme poverty, displacement from homes, sicknesses, and death. Seven million Syrians are displaced, forced to take shelter in makeshift tents or overcrowded camps. 

Throughout the year hardships are present.  But these situations become significantly more dire when the cold comes around in the wintertime. This season lasts a long time in Syria, with the cold lasting around four months. Temperatures drop down to sub-zero, making the bitter weather harsh to deal with. 

4.6 million Syrians in the northwest are in danger during the winter months.  For many in Syria, their homes are makeshift tents not built to withstand the freezing temperatures. Food becomes scarcer and the living conditions more brutal. 

Humaniti and our partner Watan Group provided food supplies to 300 vulnerable Syrian families, approximately 1,500 people. Along with the meals, we also distributed other essential items to help them face the cold of the winter season such as blankets and warmer clothes. Our volunteers were able to reach these families and provide comfort where it was needed the most. 

The cold is something we are all too familiar with. For many, we have the ease of turning on a heater or wrapping ourselves in the warmer clothes we own. With what we have, it is our duty to ensure that the feeling of warmth is not exclusive and that those in need can feel protected and safe no matter the season. Humaniti recognized the constant struggle the people of Syria experience every day and our goal was to extend a helping hand.

At times like these, even the smallest acts of kindness can offer immense comfort. Whether it’s a nourishing meal, a drink of water, or a blanket to feel safe under, it shows that these people are not forgotten. Our efforts may not change the dire situation Syria faces right away, but they show that compassion perseveres. 

Humaniti continues to support Syrians, not just during winter but whenever it is necessary. We will advocate for their rights, safety, and well-being in every season. By showing up in moments of crisis, we hope to remind Syrians that they are seen, heard, and supported.
