A sense of stability for earthquake survivors

Natural disasters leave a devastating wake. They can strike without warning and when they do, the people are left to deal with the aftermath.

The earthquakes in 2023 devastated many countries and people in those regions, including Morocco. Marrakech was the city that was most affected. More than 2,900 people lost their lives to this disaster and 5,500 people were injured. Families were torn apart, homes reduced to rubble, and entire communities found themselves without shelter or resources overnight.

Humaniti and our partners brought relief to 1,000 survivors by distributing food baskets, bottles of water, hygiene kits, and baby kits with milk and diapers.

The food and water kits reached individuals who needed it most, with the damages leaving many without a home and with no access to these resources. With infrastructure damaged and stores closed, even the simplest resources became difficult to find. The food baskets allowed families to regain some sense of normalcy.

Experiencing this struggle with a baby is an even greater challenge for families. The inclusion of baby kits and diapers helped mothers and families handle this situation along with their young babies.

On February 6th an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck southeast Turkiye leaving thousands of people displaced.

In the immediate aftermath, Humaniti and our partners provided 174 tents to those who were displaced, along with 1,316 sleeping bags to keep them warm at night. Additionally, we provided 1,042 ready-to-eat meals so that amidst the pain and struggle, a hearty meal could give them comfort.

But the support didn’t stop there. In the following weeks, food aid was sent to 5,000 families in these cities in Turkiye; Hassa, Kirikhan, Antakya, Defne and Samandagi.

We believe that restoring dignity means showing up consistently, listening to the communities we serve, and working with them to rebuild what was lost. From natural disasters to ongoing humanitarian struggles, Humaniti remains committed to compassion in action — wherever and whenever it’s needed most.
