Delivering meals to break fast in Somalia

Iftar is a valuable time for Muslims all over the world. It is the time when they break their fast during the sacred month of Ramadan. Doing so is an action that holds much meaning – a symbol of concluding a day of fasting, sacrifice and dedication in the servitude of God. It is meant to be a moment of spirituality, community and gratefulness. Many of us are lucky to have a wide amount of food on our tables in Ramadan, something that should not be taken for granted. In countries like Somalia, food can be scarce, and many families go without their regular meals, let alone an iftar during Ramadan. Some fast during this month even though they might not have the proper foods to break it in the evening.

Seeing their strength in the face of such struggle, Humaniti launched a project along with Relieve Humanity International (RHI) to aid those in need of proper food. We worked to bring food packages to the tables of people in the following cities; Hargeisa, Burco, Mogadishu, and Baidoa. Within these packages were essential foods and ingredients such as rice, flour, oil, sugar, dates, and juices. They were able to provide for these families across these cities, giving them the means to satisfy their hunger and quench their thirst. Humaniti distributed these packages to around 285-300 families, with the average number of people within family units being around 7 people per family. These essential food items helped approximately 1800-2100 individuals, allowing them to experience the beauty of an iftar without having to worry about whether or not they will have a meal.

Humaniti believes in helping to create meaningful experiences for everyone, especially those moments during such an important and sacred month. Every Muslim should have the means to partake in the blessed month of Ramadan. It is a month of growth and spirituality where families can fast together and eat together.
