A second chance for Gazans with debilitating injuries

The people of Gaza are the definition of perseverance and strength. They have faced immense struggles and pain and have lost immeasurable amounts of their livelihoods.

Amidst the bombings and the attacks, tens of thousands of people in Gaza suffer from orthopedic injuries or disabilities that inhibit their ability to walk. They have been stripped of their right to be able-bodied. Children miss out on a childhood where they can run and play, and be children. For men and women, it means they lose their independence, struggle with providing for their family and lack the freedom to move.

Despite these struggles, we still see their smiling faces on our screens, and witness their strength to keep going and to live their life despite it all. For many in Gaza, mobility is not just about movement—it is about reclaiming a sense of autonomy, the right to govern oneself, to be a person who can walk, run, to be free from afflicted pain and suffering.

However, the healthcare system in Gaza is constantly being targeted by oppressors, leaving doctors and surgeons sparse, medical supplies depleting and treatable injuries becoming fatal or leading to lifelong disabilities. The lack of proper service has left them without the means to care for themselves and the needed medical supplies for treatment, making treatable injuries lead to lifelong disabilities. They are left to suffer in silence, unable to access the surgeries and rehabilitation they desperately need.

Humaniti, along with our partner FAJR Scientific, wanted to alleviate the pain of our brothers and sisters in Gaza, to extend support to those who need it most. The goal was to dispatch highly skilled surgeons from across the world to provide life-saving surgeries to over 80,000 Gazans. These orthopedic surgeries can restore a person’s ability to use the limb again. An injury that could have proven to be life-threatening can now be treated with efficiency and care, strengthening the chances of a full recovery. The impact of these surgeries extends far beyond the operating room; they offer people a second chance at a fuller life.

Our medical professionals were able to reach and aid thousands of individuals who otherwise would have had no access to the essential care they so desperately needed. By sending expert surgeons, orthopedic specialists, and healthcare teams to Gaza, Humaniti and FAJR Scientific have not only provided immediate relief but also created long-term hope for many families. These surgeries were crucial not only for restoring mobility but also for reinvigorating the spirits of the people.
