As families fleeing conflict and displacement face the challenges of starting anew, Humaniti and Smile Canada are stepping in to provide essential support for those caring for children with disabilities or terminal illnesses.
Arriving in a new country, after fleeing a home that was the only place they knew, comes with more stress than one can imagine. Families who have left their homeland face challenges such as displacement, and adjusting to a new life, culture and language while also experiencing financial hardships and uncertainty about what their future holds for them in this different environment.
There’s also the emotional toll of leaving behind family, friends, and familiar surroundings, the sense of familiarity and comfort left behind. For those who have a child with a terminal illness or disability, their challenges are 10-fold. While they must worry about their new life, they also have to ensure their child will receive the specialized care and support they need. The responsibility is immense, and these families carry that responsibility with much strength.
However, the weight on their shoulders is undeniable and can become overwhelming. Dealing with the stress of a new home and worrying about their children’s adjustment and their own, can take a toll on anyone.
With our partner Smile Canada, Humaniti is working towards alleviating the stress for these families. We provided holistic support to 50 Afghan and Sudanese families who have children with a terminal illness or disability. Our support encompasses aid for medical expenses, securing necessary equipment, assisting with therapy costs, or simply providing emotional support. We ensure that these families are getting the support needed to transition as easily as they can to their new lives. 200-250 individuals, including 120 children are supported annually through this initiative, getting funds and support to make the transition into their new life smooth and stress-free.
The initiative is designed with family in mind, to ease their burdens by assisting financially and providing special healthcare and a supportive community that is looking out for them and their child. Our goal is to make this transition as smooth and stress-free as possible.
With the right support, time and effort, these families can build a life, no matter the place or environment. A life where their children are provided with the care they need and their struggles are recognized and met with the compassion and kindness they deserve.
